Indigenous Agriculture Intro

Trainees with a relevant apprenticeship can earn trade hours.

Not sure what training to take? This is a great program to start with!

There will be 1 day per week when trainees can work in community on a community garden or farm, if provided by the partner First Nation.

Program Length: 4-5 weeks on-site intensive, plus in-community time.

Program Outline: The following topics will be covered in this training, season-allowing. We have different cohorts, usually one for each season.

  • Site safety, how to run a safety meeting, and learn from near misses.

  • Radio communication

  • ATV safety

  • Indigenous Agriculture and “Regenerative” Agriculture

  • Seeds - greenhouse and direct

  • Weeding and weed control methods

  • Mulching

  • Plowing and tilling

  • Soil testing

  • Fermenting

  • Chainsaw safety

  • Bed creation and flipping

  • Hay mowing and baling

  • Transplanting

  • Greenhouse operations

  • Intro to Machine Training, Heavy machine training

  • Farm planning, business side

  • Mechanics: Gas engine troubleshooting

  • Introduction to Plumbing and Irrigation

  • Tool orientation and safety

  • Harvesting and packing

  • Composting

  • Chicken care

  • Introduction to Cattle
