We are providing employment and mentorship opportunities at Tea Creek in Kitwanga, BC for Indigenous Youth aged 15 - 30. Youth receive a wage for participating.

The expected outcomes of the program are: fostering skills development, community engagement and mentorship, providing hope for future training, education and employment opportunities.

We are running multiple groups on site, each group is limited to three (3) people total as part of our Covid19 protocols.

The entire program is outdoors or home-based, as much as possible.

This specific program runs until March 26, 2021. Intakes will always be open! Please apply anytime.

The details

Food Sovereignty work is a perfect meeting place for business, health, wellness, life skills, trades training, cultural learning, work experience, and of course amazing food. With this Indigenous Youth Works pilot program, we have different cohorts/ bubbles of people working in different areas. These areas are:

1) Site Services and Maintenance
Participants will receive an introduction to Indigenous Cooking, which is a potential trade. There will also be site cleaning and sanitation, and labouring experience. During Covid, this will be a mostly home-based program. There is also a small on-site Maintenance crew.

2) Carpentry and Construction
This group works on building basic structures and infrastructure. Participants will receive an introduction to construction-related trades such as carpentry, electrical, and plumbing.

3) Agriculture and Machine Operation
This group will work on as many farming-related activities as possible (and season allowing) including harvesting, washing and packing, season roll-up, and preparation for next season. Trades samplers will include mechanics and machine operation.

Other opportunities: Project management and administration, audio visual (photos and video).

It is possible for some groups to work hours at home, or with other organizations, or within family groups. Please contact us for more details.

All groups will receive support, on-boarding, daily labouring work experience, and will participate in regular cleanup and safety work.

Mentorship

We plan on having an Indigenous mentor as team leader as much as possible. The mentor is someone who is good at connecting with youth and helping increase their hope of employment, self-esteem, skill level, and life skills. Mentors will model healthy communication and work ethic.

Staff

This program is supported by an admin staff. We do not have staff to supervise youth with risky behaviour or youth who require extra help.

Overcoming Barriers

This program will supply transportation from partner communities, meals for participants, and all required supplies and materials.

Safety

PPE, masks, hand washing stations and hand sanitizer are provided. Most importantly for COVID19 safety, the programming is outdoors. Social distancing between “bubbles” will be practiced.

Start Date and Hours

This program is slated to start ASAP and is expected to run for 8-11 weeks, but is dependant on funding. There will be an extended winter break.
